In 2022 the Trustees embarked on an ambitious project to construct an extension to house new toilet facilities, with the work completing very recently. As part of the wider project, we consulted with users on how the redundant space within the old building could be repurposed. As the building had no kitchen, users favoured the creation of such a space, along with a seating area for socialising.
We applied for a grant from Biffa Award, a Landfill Communities Funder, and in July 2022 were awarded £63,000 to take the project forward. Obsolete plumbing and drainage were removed, and new electrics and a serving hatch were installed prior to the installation of kitchen cabinets a range cooker and other white goods. The social area seating was constructed, new flooring laid, and a kitchenette installed to finish off the space. The new facilities are very much welcomed by many existing user groups who will use it for a range of activities going forward.
This fund has enabled the community centre to achieve a major step forward in its development. The new kitchen and social space provides an area for people to get together, chat, and have coffee, it will expanded our capacity to run holiday clubs, provide catering at events, and gives the people of Mirfield a fantastic new facility they can use.

This has all been made possible thanks to funding from the Biffa Award; building communities and transforming lives.
It is so important that we continue to invest in buildings which are at the heart of their communities. The project at Mirfield Community Centre is a great example of how Biffa Award funding can help to ensure our community buildings are equipped with modern facilities that will remain fit for purpose for years to come. We can’t wait to see the results.
Rachel Maidment, Biffa Award Grants Manager
The new facilities will be formally opened by the Mayor, Cllr Vivian Lees-Hamilton, at a showcase event scheduled to take place on Sunday 2nd April 2023 – watch this space for details of the event!
